For Mathematics Majors

All college students should make time in their academic schedule to spend a semester or year studying in another country. Doing so brings many benefits, not the least of which is gaining a global perspective on issues that affect American citizens and citizens of the world. All students of the liberal arts should make obtaining this type of understanding a priority, and the best way to do this is to study outside of the United States.

English and Language majors aren't the only people who have tailor-made study abroad opportunities. Two programs, the Budapest Semster of Mathematics and Math in Moscow, offer college students majoring in one of the mathematical sciences (mathematics, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, etc.) a chance to study mathematics in English while living in another country. For more information on these programs, take a look at these web sites

Budapest Semester of Mathematics
Initiated by Paul Erdos, Laszlo Lovasz, and Vera T. Sos, the program Budapest Semesters in Mathematics provides a unique opportunity for North American undergraduates. Through thes program, mathematics and computer science majors in their junior/senior years may spend one or two semesters in Budapest and study under the tutelage of eminent Hungarian scholar-teachers.(From the Introduction page.)

Math In Moscow
The main feature of the Russian tradition of teaching mathematics has always been the development of a creative approach to studying mathematics from the very outset. Not memorizing theorems and proofs, but discovering mathematics yourself under the guidance of an experienced teacher --- this is our principle! ( From the Introduction page.)

Other study abroad programs in other country may not specialize in the education of mathematicians or computer scientists, but if through the program you take classes at a large University, you can certainly investigate the possibility of taking upper level mathematics courses while there.

Be sure to check to make sure that such course work would count toward your mathematics degree, here.

If you have any questions about these or other study abroad programs, you may consult Truman's Center For International Educaton Abroad web site, or email them. You can also talk to Jason Miller about Budapest Semester or Math in Moscow.
